Meet Archbishop Jude Thaddaeus Ruwa’ichi, O.F.M. Cap.

Archbishop Jude Thaddaeus Ruwa’ichi, O.F.M. Cap., is the current Metropolitan Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. He was appointed to this position by Pope Francis on August 15, 2019, following his tenure as Coadjutor Archbishop of Dar es Salaam since June 21, 2018.

Early Life and Religious Formation

Born on January 30, 1954, in Tanzania, Archbishop Ruwa’ichi joined the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin (O.F.M. Cap.), dedicating his life to the Franciscan ideals of humility, service, and evangelization. He was ordained a Catholic priest on November 25, 1981, beginning his pastoral journey of spreading the Gospel and strengthening the faith among believers.

Episcopal Ministry

His episcopal service spans several dioceses in Tanzania:

  • Bishop of Mbulu: Appointed on January 9, 1999, and ordained as bishop on April 16, 1999.

  • Archbishop of Mwanza: Transferred on November 10, 2005, where he served as the Metropolitan Archbishop.

  • Coadjutor Archbishop of Dar es Salaam: Appointed on June 21, 2018, assisting the then-Archbishop Polycarp Pengo.

  • Archbishop of Dar es Salaam: Officially took office on August 15, 2019, succeeding Cardinal Pengo.
